Using Your Own OpenAI API Key with AI Studio for HubSpot

By default, AI Studio charges “tokens” for using premium AI models. Now, with the new Bring Your Own Key feature for OpenAI, you can:

  • Use your own OpenAI API key when executing the Send to AI action with select OpenAI models.

  • Bypass AI Studio token usage for those specific models, enabling unlimited usage of Send to AI (all billing goes through your OpenAI account).

  • Reserve your AI Studio tokens for other features (WebSearch, Company Insights, Call Transcriptions) or providers (e.g., Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, DeepL, etc.)

Supported & Unsupported Models

Supported OpenAI Models (with your own API key):

  • GPT-4o-mini

  • GPT-4o

  • o1

  • o1-mini

  • o3-mini

Note: Naming conventions may differ from standard OpenAI model names. These are the models currently available for the AI Studio “Bring Your Own Key” feature.

Not Supported Yet:

  • AI Assistant models

  • Call Transcriptions (speech to text models)

How It Works

  1. Eligibility
    This feature is available for AI Studio users on the Enterprise or Enterprise Plus plans. If you’re on a different plan and want this feature, please contact our support or your account representative for details on upgrading.

  2. Add Your OpenAI API Key
    Go to AI Studio Integrations and enter your OpenAI API key.

    • Make sure you have a valid and active OpenAI account with a working API key.

    • Your API usage will be directly billed by OpenAI.

  3. Select Your Model
    In your HubSpot Workflow, when configuring the Send to AI action, choose one of the supported OpenAI models from the drop-down menu.

  4. Billing

    • OpenAI Billing: Any tokens consumed by these models will be billed directly to your OpenAI accountaccording to their pricing.

    • AI Studio Billing: Since you’re using your own OpenAI API key, AI Studio does not charge tokens for these specific calls. Output parameter of Send to AI action "billed tockens" should be returning 0, it means 0 tokens were charged from your AI Studio account and you're billed directly by OpenAI

    • AI Studio Tokens: You can still use your AI Studio tokens for other features, including Google PaLM, Anthropic, WebSearch, Company Insights, Translate with DeepL, etc.

  5. Usage

    • Once your key is linked, you can run the Send to AI action as many times as you need for the supported models—there is no AI Studio usage limit.

    • All prompt requests and responses will appear in your HubSpot records as usual
